Spotsylvania Real Estate > Spotsylvania Community Info Richly historic and fiercely proud of it, Virginia is unlike any other state in the U.S. No other place in the country can claim eight presidential homes, two Colonial capitals, or as many Civil War battlefields and vast plantations. The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County National Military Park encompasses the sites of four of the bloodiest Civil War battles. More than 85,000 men were wounded and more than 15,000 died on the 8,400 acres that make up the park. Markers, exhibits, trails, and buildings now identify the Confederate and Union lines, silently telling the stories of the Civil War. Chatham, an 18th century mansion, served as Union headquarters and a field house during the war. The "Stonewall" Jackson Shrine is the house where Jackson died after being mistakenly shot by his own men. Also within the park are open areas, wetlands, parkland and forest. The park is located on the fall line between the Piedmont region and the Coastal Plain region and contains a variety of vegetation and wildlife.
